The Newham Classic 10K run was created for the first time in 2009 by World Adventure Club (WAC) a company owned by Tessa before the TSFA was registered. Having achieved so much success with the local sports academy Tessa had started in the Borough of Newham the request made to Tessa for this type of event was great.
The first Newham Classic 10K took place Sunday morning 18th April 2009. The run was a total success it was supported by runners from LOCOG including the CEO. The ODA was very supportive and allowed for the first time any running event to go through the Olympic Park giving a bird's eye view of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium (although not yet completed) to the visiting runners and local runners who took part in the event.
The event attracted a number of known Charities as well as offering the opportunity to less know Charities who is looking for a platform to help their causes for example 'ACTION FOR CHILDREN' who raised over £1500 and a maximum of £6,000 was raised for charitable causes from the event.
There were also many celebrity friends eg. Jim Rosenthal, Michael Watson, BBC TV daily games show (CJ from Eggheads) Tim (2007 Apprentice winner) Olympians from Judo and athletics who took the time to come and support Tessa as well as running, present medals and say hello to the locals. There was also strong media support with BBC TV (London) Radio 5 live BSKYB and national and local paper featuring the event through their news bulletins.
Newham Council added their support to the event with the Mayor of Newham, CEO and many staff sharing in the excitement of running through the Park for the first time. It was 'History in the making'.
The Mayor express how great it was to have such an event in Newham for the local residents and provided an ideal chance to carry out a practice attempt for Newham volunteers to get involved especially the forthcoming London 2012 Olympic Games happening in Newham. He also commented that it also created an opportunity for local businesses to take an active role in community events.
The race attracted 1200 runners with a maximum of over 700 registered (recorded) local residents running. The others were made up of visiting runners from all over the UK and abroad. The winner of the first N. C 10K was won by a German who had used the event as a warm up race in preparation before running in the London Marathon the following week. The winning time was an impressive 30 min.14 seconds other foreign representatives came from Holland, Dubai, Ethiopia and Denmark.
The Newham Classic 10K has become Tessa Sanderson Foundation & Academy most successful running event and in April 2010 it attracted over 1700 runners. The event was financially supported by Newham College of Further Education, UEL and Coca-Cola who supplied us with water for the runners.
The Newham Classic 10K has now become an annual event and in 2011 the date is April 10th again one week before the big London Marathon.
The event will attract over three thousand runners and TSFA is in search of a major partner or sponsor to host the event. TSFA is already in discussion with other London areas to become a part of a running series of 10K under its banner.
